SMASHING PUMPKINS Taunt Audience In Washington D.C.

The Pulse of Radio reports that SMASHING PUMPKINS frontman Billy Corgan followed up his mocking of the audience at the band's New York City show last Thursday (November 6) by taunting a member of the crowd at a gig in Washington D.C. on Tuesday night (November 11),according to HipstersUnited.com. After Corgan observed an audience member giving him the finger following the band's jam-heavy cover of PINK FLOYD's "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun", Corgan asked what the problem was. The man responded that the band "no longer rocked" and wondered where original guitarist James Iha was. This prompted Corgan to bring a female fan onstage and say that she was Iha, before he went off on a lengthy rant about how he has not "sold out" in his 20-year career.

At last week's show in New York, a less than enthusiastic response from the crowd to the absence of hits and a 40-minute jam session in the middle of the set prompted Corgan to mock the crowd by asking, "Did I pay for this shit?"

Not all reactions to the PUMPKINS' shows on this tour have been negative, however. HipstersUnited said that the middle portion of the D.C. gig was "particularly energetic and impressive," while fans have posted supportive comments on message boards.

The shows are part of a 20th anniversary tour in which the PUMPKINS are playing different sets each night, with some of the shows skipping a lot of the band's biggest hits in favor of more obscure material.

The group played in D.C. again on Wednesday night (November 12) and moves to Boston for a two-night stand this weekend.
